Emotion, mystery, intrigue - as well as the ability to maintain looseness and transparency are all elements I try to achieve in painting in watercolor. Watercolor whispers to me. Over the years I’ve come to acknowledge this whisper in the simplification of my paint palette as well eliminating unnecessary and redundant colors - almost totally relying on a basic palette of red (rose madder genuine), yellow (cadmium yellow) and blue (ultramarine blue). These colors are my family, often coming to the rescue if I miss a step through the maintenance of color harmony. With this simplified palette, I can capture every aspect of how our colorful Wyoming landscape quite convincingly enthralls the viewer. As an artist, this fact titillates as well as encourages me to continue trekking along trails, mountains, rock formations all over this state and nation - celebrating through sketching and painting - every joyous bit of it. I have not accomplished this journey as an artist alone. Throughout the years, I have sought out the instruction of excellent teachers - and their personal help as well as the friendship of my Wyoming Artist Challenge group have been invaluable in helping me arrive at this level of proficiency. However, the medium continues to surprise me. These ‘happy accidents,’ or freedom to go with the flow, are nor so much one of choice but of recognizing the creative nature of watercolor I continue to learn my craft - remember my past, but look forward to a future filled with freedom, happy accidents - the beauty of life - and watercolors that daily celebrates my arrival as an artist.
